Table Mountain

Today I climbed up Table Mountain. It was a great experience. Feeling exhausted now, but pretty happy about it.

You can find some pictures here.

I am also working on a little map to show what I have been up to. Have a look here.

Quick Hello from Cape Town

I arrived in Cape Town yesterday for almost two weeks of vacation. I am visiting my friend Jacques and he is so kind to show me around some of his home country.

St. Patricks

Last Saturday was the biggest day of the year for the Irish. It was St. Patricks day. And after having missed most of it last year, while being on the train to Galway, I just got right in the middle of it all this year.

Together with my friend Claudia, who was visiting from Coleraine and a few other friends, we went to the parade, a few pubs and clubs, as well as the fun fair.

Great times!

One of the highlights of the weekend happened at the parade though. Out of all groups, it had to be the University of Tennessee marching band, blarring Rocky Top through the streets of Dublin:

The oldest pub +/- 300 years

After the trip to Austria, I turned right back around to go to Athlone with a friend here in Ireland. Athlone is right in the middle of the country. Really not much there. (hope Jason isn't reading this). It was good though. Nice cozy town. Was great to hang out with Jason and meet his family and his friends.

We actually went to the oldest pub in Ireland, Sean's Bar. Though they are not sure how old. Outside it says "Founded in 600 AD". The Guinness Book of Record marker inside says 900 AD. Who knows. Maybe I was too drunk already to differentiate between the numbers ;)

We then went out to (what seems to be) the only night club in town, Karma. It was pretty nice. It is amazing how much the Irish spend on and invest in night life entertainment. And alcohol.

Which brings me to the next topic. St. Patrick's day is coming up. This year, will spend it in Dublin, after going to Galway last year. Claudia, a friend from High School is coming to visit and we will see if we get up in time for the parade....

traveling again

Alright, so after going mum for a few weeks (or months), here a quick up-date:

I am currently in the middle of a nice series of weekend trips. Two weeks ago, it started by a trip to the Italien mountains and Milan. Then I went to Berlin with a few friends. Tomorrow then I will fly to Austria to spend a few days with the family in the mountains. This will then be followed by a trip to the heart of Ireland :)

Here just a bit about Italy, were I was able to go to the top of Mt. Blanc and almost freeze to death. It was almost minus 20 degrees celcius. I was not aware of the fact, that I could take pictures with my gloves on, while shaking:

Then I headed on to Milan, where I had a great time and got to see among other things The Last Supper and the Duomo. Very impressive. Here a selection of pictures:

Biology research at the University of South Carolina

What happens when you have a webcam with a motion detector, bread, boredom, and way too much free time? This.

Pretty sweet Jay!
